Many people continue living at home, supported by family members and community services, even as their needs become more complex over time.
Support at Home Classification 7 is intended for people with very high care needs who wish to remain in familiar surroundings.
Although it comes with significant government funding, families often find themselves asking the same things: How much support does it actually provide? What services are covered? And will it be enough to manage increasing care needs?

Understanding Dementia and Daily Life at Home
Dementia isn’t a single disease. It’s an umbrella term for conditions that affect the brain and progressively change how someone thinks, remembers and communicates. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type, followed by vascular dementia and others.
As dementia progresses, everyday tasks, from dressing to eating to talking with loved ones, can become confusing or frustrating. Communication skills may decline and interpreting social cues can be harder. This doesn’t mean the person doesn’t want to connect; rather, their brain processes information differently.
Responsive behaviours such as agitation, repetition or pacing often reflect unmet needs, like fatigue, discomfort, misunderstanding or stress.
Understanding this is key to compassionate support.

For many families, professional support makes dementia care at home more manageable. You might explore options if:
- Daily routines are overwhelming or unsafe.

Understanding Support at Home Level 7: What It Really Means
Support at Home Classification 7 is one of eight funding levels within Australia’s aged care system. It is designed for people with very high and complex care needs who wish to remain living at home.
Within the classification scale:
- Levels 1–2 support low needs
- Levels 3–4 provide moderate assistance
- Levels 5–6 fund high care needs
- Level 7 supports very high needs
- Level 8 is reserved for critical or end-of-life care requiring near-continuous supervision
Classification 7 sits just below the highest tier. It supports individuals who need intensive daily care, often involving multiple professionals such as personal care workers, nurses and allied health practitioners.
Who Qualifies for Classification 7 Support?
Classification 7 is generally suited to people who require help with almost all daily activities and ongoing clinical oversight.
It may apply if a person:
- Needs assistance with showering, dressing, toileting, eating and mobility several times per day
- Lives with advanced dementia and requires supervision for safety
- Experiences behavioural or psychological symptoms linked to cognitive decline
- Has multiple chronic conditions requiring regular nursing input
- Requires specialised equipment such as hoists, hospital beds or wheelchairs
- Needs coordinated support from several health professionals
For individuals living with severe dementia, this level of funding can provide structured daily support while maintaining the familiarity and comfort of home.

How Many Care Hours Can You Expect?
There is no fixed number of hours attached to Classification 7. The total hours depend on:
- The provider’s hourly rates
- The mix of services used
- Care management fees
However, based on typical pricing across Australia, families often receive approximately 18 to 24 hours of support per week.
This may include a combination of:
- Multiple daily personal care visits
- Regular nursing services
- Physiotherapy or occupational therapy
- Domestic support
- Meal preparation
- Transport assistance
Support at Home Classification 7 Funding
One of the most important aspects of Support at Home Classification 7 is the funding allocation.
As it currently stands:
- Quarterly budget: approximately $14,537
- Annual budget: approximately $58,148
This funding is allocated by the Australian Government. It is not paid directly to you. Instead, your chosen aged care provider draws from this budget to deliver services on your behalf.
Important Points About the Funding
- The amount is the same for everyone at Classification 7.
- It is indexed annually (usually on 1 July).
- How far your budget stretches depends on your provider’s pricing and administration fees.
Two providers with different fee structures can deliver very different hours of care from the same budget. This makes provider selection extremely important.
Understanding the Limits of Your Funding
Support at Home Classification 7 funding is limited to care services. It does not cover:
- Rent or mortgage payments
- Utility bills
- Groceries (unless part of a care service)
- Entertainment or general living expenses
- Major home renovations
Understanding these limits helps families plan realistically.
How to Apply for Support at Home Level 7
The process begins through My Aged Care, the Australian Government’s entry point for aged care services.
Step 1: Register
Contact My Aged Care online or via phone.
Step 2: Assessment
Complete a screening and, if eligible, a comprehensive assessment using the Integrated Assessment Tool.
Step 3: Receive Outcome Letter
You will receive confirmation of your classification level and funding approval.
Step 4: Enter the Priority System
Your urgency rating determines how quickly funding becomes available.
Step 5: Choose a Provider
Once funding is assigned, you have 56 days (extendable to 84 days) to select a provider and sign a Service Agreement.
Is Level 7 the Right Fit for Your Situation?
Classification 7 is often suitable when:
- Assistance is required for nearly all daily activities
- Supervision is needed throughout the day
- Nursing support is required multiple times per week
- Falls or behavioural risks must be closely managed
However, it may not be sufficient if:
- Overnight supervision is required every night
- Palliative care demands constant monitoring
- Hospital admissions continue despite intensive support
What Are Your Options?
Health conditions rarely remain static. If a temporary setback occurs (such as a hospital stay), additional short-term restorative care funding may be available.
If needs permanently increase, reassessment can lead to a higher classification and additional funding.
Regular communication with your provider is key to adapting care plans effectively.
