Recognising Elder Abuse: Awareness, Action, and Support in Australia
Every year on June 15, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) calls attention to a growing but often hidden issue—elder abuse. In Australia, with our ageing population and increasing demand for aged care services, it’s more important than ever to understand the signs, statistics, and steps we can take to protect and support older people in our communities.
What Is Elder Abuse?
Elder abuse is any act that causes harm to an older person and is carried out by someone they trust—such as a family member, friend, carer, or service provider. This abuse can be:
- Physical: Hitting, pushing, or restraining
- Emotional or Psychological: Intimidation, threats, humiliation
- Financial: Misuse of money, property, or assets
- Neglect: Failing to provide adequate care or essentials
- Sexual: Unwanted sexual activity or harassment
The Reality in Australia: Elder Abuse Statistics
While elder abuse is often underreported, research provides insight into its prevalence:
- Around
1 in 6 older Australians
(aged 65 and over) living in the community experienced abuse in the past year.
- Psychological abuse was the most commonly reported type, affecting around
12% of older people.
- Financial abuse
affected around 2%, often involving misuse of power of attorney or coercion.
- Women are more likely than men to experience elder abuse, and adult children are the most commonly identified perpetrators.
These numbers are likely underestimates due to fear, shame, or dependency preventing older people from reporting abuse.
Warning Signs of Elder Abuse
Recognising the signs of elder abuse can be difficult, but here are some key indicators to watch for:
Physical Signs:
- Unexplained injuries or bruising
- Sudden changes in appearance or hygiene
- Over- or under-medication
Emotional or Behavioural Signs:
- Withdrawal from social interactions
- Sudden changes in mood or personality
- Fearfulness or anxiety, especially around certain individuals
Financial Signs:
- Unexplained bank withdrawals or financial hardship
- Missing possessions
- Sudden changes to wills or financial documents
Neglect:
- Malnutrition, dehydration
- Poor living conditions
- Missed medical appointments
